Schedule…It’s Never Too Late!

We have four children, you would think we have a good schedule in place or something to help manage our home well!  However, it’s been crazy the last few years.  Let’s do a quick recap:

April 2009 – Lenna-Grace was born
January 2010 – Move to NC
September 2010 – Zachary was born
September 2011 – Move to SC (not far from our home in NC, but it was a move)
March 2012 – Move to Florida
March 2012 – Dalton was born
September 2012 – Move houses in Florida

SO….it’s been crazy with changes and having babies!  Plus, John was on second shift until this past November.

As you know, I have been changing our family’s health little by little…beginning with cleaning products, trying to make more homemade foods, and then with adding good, healthy supplements to everyone’s diets.  Now….it was time to bring more structure to our home!

It’s funny because everyone would say “You must be so organized and structured with three little ones…”  Far from it!  This past week I made it a priority (and I am still working on it) to bring structure to our home.

Jamie has always had structure–he does not function well without it.  His routine does not change or you really throw him off balance.  We try to give him 3-4 weeks of doing something new in a routine to get it set in.  He is doing amazing this year with school and church.  We are very excited that he has grown so much since moving here!

Now…the three little ones.  This is where structure and a good schedule has been needed for some time.  I have either been alone in the evenings before or nursing or just exhausted that I did not want to fight any battles–kids slept where they wanted and fell asleep in anyway!  TV on, in my bed, on the couch, you name it!  So….here’s what I started doing last week and I am making it my personal commitment to stick to it!

1)  I moved the crib into Lenna-Grace and Zachary’s bedroom.  Now there’s a bunkbed (Lenna-Grace on top, Zachary on the bottom) and crib in there  All three in the same room….I am hoping this makes life easier!

2)  Bedtime routine.  I’ve tried several, but I never stick with them.  Now….no matter what…7:30, all the little ones and I head to their bedroom with milk, a small snack, and books…then close the door

3)  Read books–We read about 5-10 books–Yes that many!  I want them settled and calm.  This is a great way for us to read together and let them settle down on the floor while I read or they help me read.

4)  Lights Out….After reading and our snack (about 20-30 minutes), I turn out the lights.  Lenna-Grace and Zachary get in their beds.  I hold Dalton while I sing a few songs.  We sing “Jesus Loves Me” and “He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands.”  (And they make me say EVERYONE…”Grammie and Papa in his hands..TT and DoDo in his hands…Blade and Ty….Wind and Rain….etc.).

5)  Lay Dalton down in the crib.

6) Snuggle with Zachary and say prayers with him.

7)  Snuggle with Lenna and say prayers with her.

8) Mommy leaves…

So far….So good!  Dalton is sleeping great.  Lenna-Grace is doing pretty good (waking up maybe 1-2 times).  Zachary gets up middle of the nihgt and comes to my bed.  Right now, I let him.  I’m not fighting too many battles at once.  After a couple of weeks of this routine, I will walk him back to his room.

Morning routine–I am also trying to start structuring our morning better.  However, Lenna-Grace is very hard to get up!  Right now, I try to have everyone up by 8  This is easy for the boys, but not Lenna-Grace.  I want to get her in the habit of getting up, having some relaxing time, and then eating breakfast.  This way, when we start officially homeschooling in the Fall, she will start “school” by 9.  I want that to be structured/scheduled time.

I’ll keep everyone updated.  But so far, I’m very happy with this routine.  It was tough a few nights ago–everyone kept waking up at different times and waking the other up!  However, so far 4 out of the 5 nights have been great.  That does not mean all three have slept through the night.  It means it is going well and I can hope it will continue to go well!

What type of structure do you have in your family?

Raising Healthy Children: What You Need to Know About Vitamins

I am super excited to share a post with you today by a friend who introduced me to Shaklee.  Kylie Hinkle is a wife, mommy to two boys and a girl on the way, and blogger at The Imperfect Home.

Kylie’s recent blog is on Children’s Vitamins and what can be found in them!  I am grateful that she is letting me share her knowledge with you.  Please read!

I have so much information here that I am going to dive right in.

In 2007 the FDA became aware of reports of elevated levels of lead found in certain vitamins. In response, they conducted a survey to determin the content of lead in women’s and children’s vitamins.
Here are some of the common brands that were listed containing lead.
Nature Plus
Emergen-C Jr.
One A Day
Life Solutions
Mother Nature
The Vitamin Shoppe
Lil Critters

There are so many more. This is just a short list of some of the children’s vitamins containing lead, I did not even list any in the women’s prenatals, or the adult women category. Check out the site yourself for more information.

According to the
Lead poisoning occurs when lead builds up in the body, often over a period of months or years. Even small amounts of lead can cause serious health problems. Children under the age of 6 are especially vulnerable to lead poisoning, which can severely affect mental and physical development. At very high levels, lead poisoning can be fatal.

So after seeing the “small” amounts of lead found in the vitamins listed above, you may have thought, “oh it is only a little”. Yes, you are right, but we just heard from the Mayo Clinic that lead can build up in your body. Not only that, children are more vulnerable to lead poisoning.

But this study was done 5 years ago, surely they wouldn’t still have lead in them.

I would hope you are right. The problem with thinking this way is the fact that we are trusting the FDA to tell us what is bad. (That is a whole other blog post all together). The FDA cannot possibly test every ingredient in every product on the market. There is just not enough time or resources for that. And we also have the problem of the FDA approving things that are actually harmful for us.

Chicago Tribune article, “U.S. allows chemicals in food that are illegal elsewhere“

Shape article, 13 Banned Foods Still Allowed in the U.S.”

If I can’t trust the FDA to protect my heath, what do I do now?

You become the health advocate for your family.

Are there trusted brands out there?

I don’t know about all that may be trusted, but I do know about one that follows pharmaceutical standards. A company that conducts over 350 tests on every single new botanical ingredient for heavy metals, pesticides, or any of hundreds of other harmful contaminants. And they continue to conduct over 100,000 quality tests annually to guarantee the purity and safety of each and every product.

So what brand is this?

Why is Shaklee better?

1. Shaklee has been committed to purity for over 50 years!
2.They have 90 articles published in peer review publications, not the magazines you see on the self of your doctors office, peer reviewed publications!
3. They have a 100% guarantee on ALL of their products. You don’t like it, you send it back for a refund.
4. Shaklee products do what they promise to do. Meaning, they actually get absorbed into your body, you are not just paying for expensive pee!
5. They have the first-of-its-kind study called their Landmark Study, showing that people who took Shaklee supplements for over 20 years had markedly better health than those who just took a multivitamin or no supplementation at all.
Read more about the Landmark Study.

Can I find Shaklee in any stores?

How do I get Shaklee products?

You can find a local Shaklee distributor or simply visit this website and start shopping.

The supplements are just some of the naturally safe products Shaklee offers.
They offer products for:

Healthy Nutrition
Healthy Home
Healthy Beauty
Healthy Weight

Kylie also shared in her blog how to help teach your kids to swallow pills.  Her 3-year old son can swallow his vitamins!  Check out her tips:

  1. Do not teach children to look up at the sky to swallow a pill. This actually restricts the amount of space in your esophagus when trying to swallow. You actually need them to look down slightly, not much, just slightly. This will open up the esophagus making it easier to swallow.
  2. For my son, it helps to have him take a drink, hold the water in his mouth, slide the supplement in, and then swallow.
  3. Don’t show any discouragement if they can’t get it. Just say something like, “Thank you for trying, maybe we can try again tomorrow.”
  4. If they can’t get it at this time, don’t push it. Just keep crushing your supplements with your mortar and pestle.

I am very grateful for Kylie introducing me to Shaklee.  Since using their Get Clean products, our 14-year old no longer takes Zyrtec for his allergies (he use to throw up almost daily for congestion).  And since placing the whole family on Shaklee supplements, Lenna-Grace  no longer takes her 5 allergy and asthma medications!  As well, all of our children have a lot better immune system!!  Thanks, Kylie!!

My baby is FOUR!!

Happy Birthday, Lenna-Grace Caroline Robinson!!

Today, our sweet baby girl celebrates her 4th birthday.   She has grown so much into such a beautiful little girl.  She is very caring and takes great care of others.  She received her birthday card in the mail from Nanny (her great grandmother) and it had $5 in it.  I asked what she wanted to buy and her reply, “I want to find Bubba a music box with a car on it.”  How sweet and thoughtful!  Being the only girl in the family, she holds a very special place with everyone!

She is a bright girl who loves to play outside, dance, sing, learn, and teach her little brothers anything!  She enjoys our “school time” and loves going to church.  She has learned a lot over the past year, but what brings the most joy is hearing her “childlike faith!”  Zachary was upset yesterday because he could not find a toy.  Lenna-Grace replies, “Don’t worry Bubba, just ask God for help.  He can help with anything.”  Or when I was sick and she laid beside me, rubbing my head and said “Mommy, I will pray God makes you better!”

Look at how she’s grown! lennahospitalApril 8, 2009 (8 lbs, 9 oz)

FaceTime and Skype

Technology is amazing, isn’t it?  When John and I moved to North Carolina away from my parents and sister’s family (in West Virgina at the time), Lenna-Grace was only 9-months old.  My parents and I started using Skype so Lenna-Grace could still see them.  It was great!

Here is one of our first conversations with Grammie and Papa on the computer via Skype.

It was great to watch her recognize them!  While the family moved closer later on, John and I moved to Florida later.  This past year we have been away from both our families.  However, we have had the great joy of continuing to video chat.  It has been great.

When we moved, Lenna-Grace knew everyone well and understood she could not see them whenever and “missed” them.  She enjoyed being able to talk with them on the phone or computer.  By utilizing Skype and FaceTime, Zachary was able to “see” everyone more often.  And of course–with the new addition, Dalton was able to get to know my parents well by video!

It is so neat to see how well Dalton responds to my mom on the phone.  It’s noticeable that he knows who my mom is when she is here!  When he started crawling, my parents watched him on the computer.  When he started “toddling” around, they watched him toddle to the computer.  My sister and nephews are on the go a lot with sports and activities, so we do not get to video chat a lot.  However, they have gotten to enjoy the videos online or through text messaging.

My final take–not only is video chatting fun for the kids and helps us “see” each other.  It is a great way for my sweet babies to get to know and remember their family.  They use FaceTime or Skype at least once a week!

Do you use video chatting with your family that is not close by?

Happy Birthday, Dalton!

Today, our sweet, baby turned 1!  It’s a bittersweet moment for all mommies!  Their babies are no longer “babies” but have now entered the “toddler” stage.  I have truly enjoyed every moment of watching our sweet boy grow up!

daltonmommyDalton Nathaniel Robinson (8 lbs, 9 oz)

 dalton(4months) Dalton at 4-months old.

Bost-17-2402336772-O[1]And now….1-year old and 25 lbs!!

Our sweet boy has learned a lot in the last year.

  • Walking at 9- months
  • Favorite word “This”
  • Other words:  mama, dada, siss (for sissy), catch, and bath (These are the only words we can make out)
  • LOVES a shower!
  • Eats all the time
  • Chases his the others around the house….everywhere!
  • Loves dancing to the Veggie Tales Theme song
  • Has 5 teeth
  • Enjoys stacking blocks…..just to knock them down!
  • And is such a mama’s boy!

While I am excited to see him grow and develop, I already miss the baby stage!  I truly enjoy this age and watching him learn.  It’s even more exciting as he learns from Zachary and Lenna-Grace.  He picks up everything they do!  However, I look at him and just wonder “Where did my tiny boy go?”

So, what do we use?

I recently joined one of the greatest companies! Shaklee is the number one natural nutrition company in the United States. For over 55 years, they have been making people healthier. According to the Shaklee site, “We were doing it back when green was just a color and biodegradable was barely a word. In fact, as early as 1960, we made one of the first biodegradable household cleaners ever. And we were the first company in the world to obtain Climate Neutral™ certification and totally offset our CO2 emissions, resulting in a net zero impact on the environment.”

I started using Shaklee cleaning supplies in May 2012. However, I did not use it regularly. I used the laundry detergent all the time because it was safe, effective, and great for all my children and Cloth Diapers (that I used at the time). However, the past few months, I have made sure our home was 100% Shaklee products. Here are the Shaklee cleaning products I use in our home:

Honestly, I was skeptical to switch all my products to All-Natural products. I was not sure that they would clean well, especially the dish washer detergent. I have tried numerous products and spend a money on good cleaner, but still have some dishes not get clean. However, I made the switch and LOVE IT! My dishes shine!! It’s the best dish washer cleaner I have used. And I use very little of it!

Our family also used their vitamins daily. Some of the supplements I have on hand for congestion, colds, or when the kids may have been around someone sick to help prevent them from getting sick or to get rid of it quickly. Here is what we use for vitamins/supplements:

  1. John: Vitalizer
  2. Amber: Vita-Lea with Iron (multivitamin), B-Complex (extra folic acid while nursing or pregnant), Vita-D3 (I am vitamin D deficient), and Probiotic (Helps my IBS)
  3. Children: Children’s Multivitamin Increditives, Vita-C Chewable

I keep the following on hand for sicknesses or immune system builder.

Finally–Shaklee 180. This is a great weightloss program. Although I do not follow it strictly, I do drink one smoothie (or two a day). I drink one for breakfast and most days one for lunch. I love Strawberry Banana Smoothies, so this was easy for me. They provide so much protein and nutrients in ONE DRINK! It helps me stay energized and feel full.

If you have any questions about any products I use or you may be interested in, just let me know!

Joining Shaklee

As many of you already know, I joined a wonderful team of moms in selling Shaklee Products. You do not have to be a mom to sell Shaklee products; however, the team I work with are all moms:) While earning a little extra money for the family is nice, that was not my main reason for joining Shaklee as distributor. So why did I join?

  1. I love their cleaning products! They are safe, effective, and help make my family healthier by getting rid of all the toxins and chemicals used in other products. My 1-, 2-, and almost 4-year old can help me clean any part of my house using Shaklee products. There is no chemicals to hurt them if the try to drink it or squirt each other in the face. In fact, Zachary sprayed Dalton in the face (he was only about 2-months old) with Basic H All-Purpose cleaner and NOTHING! No red eyes, no irritation, nothing! My children to love to “clean their toys” and it’s OK! AND….there are no odors to bother their little noses!
  2. Their vitamins and supplements are amazing! They are all natural and work! I have my own “story” to tell in another post about how wonderful their probiotics are!
  3. It’s something I need. I have a lot of friends who sell products (Mary Kay, Avon, Pampered Chef, 31, etc.) I love many of these products and I have honestly debated joining one. Why haven’t I? I know I would buy more in products that I do not need. I am glad I can support some of my friends with their home businesses and purchase these products as I need them. However, I do not want to feel obligated to buy them because I sell them. With Shaklee, I use their products daily; therefore, it’s a good investment for me.
  4. Creating Healthier Homes. Jamie use to throw up once or twice a day. We thought it was gag reflexes, but he was always a lot better while on Zyrtec. I did not realize that our cleaning products were possily inducing his allergies. In fact, I did not even consider that Shaklee Cleaning products took away this issue until recently when I reflected on when I quit giving him Zyrtec. Without a doubt, I know his allergies were induced by products I used in our home. Lenna-Grace is also off all her allergy and asthma medication. All our childrn are healthier since placing them on vitamins and supplements from Shaklee.
  5. Natural Remedies. I will definitely do a post on what Shaklee products I use for my health and why. However, for now, let me simply share that it is great to not have to use prescriptions that could be harmful to me, my breastfed baby, or any future pregnanies. I use Shaklee supplements to help with postpardum depression, IBS, and headaches.
  6. No Hosting Parties—This is just not me. I may have a “Get Clean” Party soon to share with other mommies about the products, but overall, I do not want to have to “throw” parties.
  7. Products are a little lower in cost. So I am trying to be honest here. It is a plus that in selling the products, my products are little less. If I am going to use the products regularly, why not get them a little cheaper?
  8. Sharing is my marketing tool. It is easy to share with others a great product that you use regularly. And if I can share with others and get paid a small commission, why not? It is simply referring people to a company that I have started to really love!
  9. No Quotas. I have four children, three under 4 currently! I may not have the time or energy to put into a home business. Many companies require you to sell XX amount of products or dollars in order to remain a distributor/seller or to get the discount. I do not want to feel pressured to sell products. With Shaklee, I do not have to. And I do not feel my director would ever pressure me either.
  10. It’s Simple. When I discussed with John and about joining, I did not feel overwhelmed with details. It seemed so simple to me. We use the products. The products help our family. All I need to do is share. If others are interested, great. If not, it’s no biggie to me! Simple!

Well, there you have it! My reasons for becoming a Shaklee Distributor. However, I really do not like the term distributor. It sounds so strange. When I was ordering some products, I told John I had to ask my distributor what would be best. Of course, John’s reply was “Distributor? She’s like your drug dealer?” LOL. Yep, you know my hubby:)

If you are interested in any of the products I use, be sure to visit the Shaklee page. I will be posting more on the products and how we use them. I will also be doing a giveaway!!
